The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) is one of the largest health care facilities within the Department of Veterans Affairs. It is one component of the VA Desert Pacific Healthcare Network (VISN22) offering services to Veterans residing in Southern California and Southern Nevada. VAGLAHS consists of two ambulatory care centers, a tertiary care facility and 8 community based outpatient clinics. VAGLAHS serves Veterans residing throughout five counties: Los Angeles, Ventura, Kern, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo. There are 1.4 million Veterans in the VAGLAHS service area. VAGLAHS is affiliated with both UCLA School of Medicine and USC School of Medicine, as well as more than 45 colleges, universities and vocational schools in 17 different medical, nursing, paramedical and administrative programs.VA encourages persons with disabilities to apply. Duties
This position is located in the Pathology and Lab Service at VA Greater Los Angeles Health Care System – West Los Angeles Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. Under the direct technical supervision of the Molecular Genetics Technologist Supervisor and the administrative supervision of the Director of Cytogenetic and Molecular Testing, the position performs routine molecular laboratory procedures and techniques used for the preparation, processing, and analysis of nucleic acid samples as authorized by the Laboratory Directors (Director and Technical Supervisor). All tasks shall be performed in accordance with established departmental procedures and documentation protocols. Major functions and responsibilities of the Medical Technologist – Technical Specialist (Molecular) include but not limited to:
· Perform high-complexity tests as authorized by the technical supervisors
· Prepare human and bacterial samples for analysis using genomic and plasmid nucleic acid preparation techniques
· Utilize restriction enzyme digestion techniques, PCR (polymerase chain reaction) techniques, and Electrophoresis blotting and hybridization on nucleic acid samples
· Utilize Photographic and auto radiographic techniques and other documentation or image analysis procedures
· Analyze results and data produced from the nucleic acid procedures (as above)
· Perform testing of newly developed lab procedures and techniques, as directed and report on results
· Maintain complete and accurate documentation and records
· Perform case review prior to final report
· Trains other staff as assigned
· Perform other related duties as qualified, trained and assigned
· Advise all organizational levels on various aspects of the specialized testing
· Conduct studies and recommend changes to correct deficiencies and improve the specialty area
· Design work flow to accomplish objectives in the clinical specialty area
· Identify training needs appropriate for the type and complexity of the laboratory services performed
· Identify, define, and resolve issues associated with complex aspects of data or unique or controversial aspects of the testing
· Analyze emerging trends and technology and adopt appropriate methods and testing
· Apply laws, policies, precedents, regulatory, licensing, and accrediting requirements
· Maintain process control in a specialty area through a multifaceted quality assurance program
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 07:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
