About the Position:
The Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) is a relatively small organization with a mission critical to our national defense. Our job is to process applicants for all five services into the armed forces. The job is both challenging and rewarding. For most new military service members, processing through the MEPS is the first real exposure to a military operation. For that reason, we seek customer-oriented employees with a desire to serve their country in a meaningful way.
The Fort Hamilton MEPS is one of a network of 65 MEPS located nationwide and in Puerto Rico. A separate Department of Defense (DoD) agency, USMEPCOM is comprised of two geographical sectors and staffed with personnel from all military services. The mission of USMEPCOM and the Fort Hamilton MEPS is to process individuals for enlistment or induction into the armed services, based on DoD-approved peacetime and mobilization standards.
Three primary areas are considered in determining an applicant's qualifications for enlistment:
Aptitude for military service
Physical qualification
Background evaluation screening
NOTE: This is a term appointment and it may be extended up to total of 6 years. Contingent to specific conditions there may be an opportunity to be noncompetitively converted to a career-conditional or career appointment.
The incumbent of this position serves as a Human Resources Assistant in a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) and provides administrative support, record maintenance and accountability and Enlistment processing. Specifically, you will:
Verify applicants' Emergency Data Records
Prepare correspondence in accordance with agency regulations
Utilize an automated system to fingerprint individuals
Assemble documents in accordance with specific military service requirements
Distribute applicant documents to appropriate organizations
Interview candidates to obtain and verify background information
Maintain electronic enlistment files in accordance with established regulations
Travel Required
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.
Qualified typist and must type 40 Words Per Minute
Shift work; nights and weekends, as required
Unscheduled overtime, as required
Business travel up to 5% of the time
TERM position NTE 2 years
This is a part time position (20 hours per week)

One year trial/probationary period may be required.
Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination.
Direct Deposit of Pay is Required.
This is a Career Program (CP) 50 position.
Employee may be required to work an occasional Saturday and/or shift work (work before 0600 or after 1800 hours).
Employees will routinely be required to work unscheduled overtime to accommodate fluctuations in workload based on the daily mission requirements.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements experience and/or education described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1.) Using automated software systems to enter/extract data; 2.) Maintaining/safeguarding files; 3.) Reviewing and/or editing correspondence; and 4.) Greeting/directing visitors to appropriate locations/personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
