  This National Guard position is for a MATERIALS HANDLER (SSC), Position Description Number D1909000and is part of the IL USPFO, National Guard.

  NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.

  Responsibilities

  
  As a MATERIALS HANDLER (SSC), WG-6907-7, you will serve as a Small Shop Chief performing all of the following tasks: Plan and lay out work to be accomplished in the shop which is then completed by the individual and lower graded worker(s); Possess the knowledge and skills found at the journeyman level as well as those required for planning, accomplishing and maintaining a functional shop maintenance program; Independently determine appropriate maintenance procedures such as how and when the work should be accomplished; Estimate manpower, equipment and material requirements; Devise and maintain all program plans and records, is skilled in surveillance and troubleshooting techniques, and able to determine maintenance/repair procedures needed without benefit of technical supervisory guidance; Plan, organize and direct shop maintenance programs/procedures under general supervision; Determine approaches, methods and courses of action required to accomplish the mission of the shop in an effective and efficient manner; May provide recommendations and input to the supervisor concerning personnel actions such as performance appraisals, awards, position description changes, disciplinary actions, leave, etc.

  Conditions of Employment

  • National Guard Membership is required.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
  • Position available when vacated by incumbent.

  
  MILITARY REQUIREMENTS:
  Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership. If you are not sure you are eligible for military membership, please contact a National Guard recruiter prior to applying for this position.

  Qualifications

  GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training which demonstrates the ability to compare item identification against receiving reports and issue request forms; skill in using hand trucks, dollies, and other equipment to move stock; ability to use hammers, pliers, and other hand tools; and to follow oral and written instructions.
  
  SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG-07 Level - 12 months experience performing inventory and inspections to determine serviceability of stocked items. Experience in interpreting and applying written instructions, reference materials, publications, and manuals. Experience in setting up and rotating storage locations considering factors such as life expectancy, available space, product turnover, etc.
  
  
  Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
