Summary

About the Agency

This position is located in Rock Creek Park, in the Maintenance Division. The purpose of this position is to properly care for and maintain trees within the boundaries of Rock Creek Park according to NPS management guidelines and accepted industry standards. This is a Career/Career-Conditional Full-Time appointment.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

This position is concurrently open under Announcement Number: NPS-1616-ROCR-17-10024519-MP for merit promotion eligibles and those eligible to apply under special hiring authorities.

Duties

• The incumbent of this position prunes, removes, plants, transplants, sprays and cultivates trees and climbs trees up to 120 feet in height for tree maintenance activities.
• Incumbent will work with tree crew to remove large hazard trees and perform mature tree pruning, crown cleaning, crown thinning, crown reduction, crown restoration and vista pruning.
• Must be able to rig cables and ropes to use cranes, remove hazardous trees, and maneuver large trees for planting.
• Work is performed in areas when free-falling is not possible and where great care is needed to protect resources and park users.
• The incumbent is required to operate gasoline or diesel powered vehicles equipped with air brakes in the performance of regular duties.
• The incumbent will also operate pickup trucks, crew cab utility trucks, and forklifts.

• Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
• You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
• You must possess and maintain a current Commercial Driver's License. Class B-Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement or higher. (A copy of your Driver's License MUST be submitted. If you fail to provide a copy you will be rated ineligible).
• You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
• You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
• If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
• You may be required to travel overnight away from home for training. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
