About the Position:The Watervliet Arsenal is an Army-owned and-operated manufacturing center located in New York. It is the oldest, continuously active arsenal in the United States having begun operations in 1813. Today it is relied upon by U.S. and foreign militaries to produce the most advanced, high-powered weaponry for cannon, howitzer, and mortar systems. The Arsenal is the only location in the DoD that has a weapons research facility (BenΓ©t Laboratories) collocated with a manufacturing facility (Arsenal).

Duties
Receive mechanical and technical instruction through production shop assignments and classroom / lab study, at varying stages or degrees of advancement, in a 4-year planned course which, upon satisfactory completion, qualifies the employee for the position of journeyman machinist.
Through industrial shop assignments, together with detailed instructions by shop instructors and/or senior craftsmen, is taught the set-up and operation of machine tools such as engine lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders, various numerical control machines, four and five axis automated machinery, and the hand work involved in bench and precision assembly jobs. Is instructed on how to decide the best method to use to perform a given job, maximum machine cutting speeds and feeds to use considering material being worked on, finish desired, machine capacity, the ability to measure parts accurately with precision and semi-precision measuring instruments, recognition of different types of metals and their physical properties; the use to which various machine tools are adapted; and related tasks incidental to the mastery of trade principles and practices.
Temporarily assigned to various other technical and administrative departments to experience the full range of training scheduled within the plant. Spend approximately 1,400 hours in formal academic classroom work under the direction of an instructor involving the essentials of courses such as Applied Technical Mathematics, Engineering Drawing and Microcomputer Drafting, Machining Processes Theory, Process Planning, Practical Metallurgy, Numerical Control Programming, and additional courses as required, to keep pace with trade technology.
* This position and the intended journeyman target position are structured as part of a rigorous planned training program and as such, requires attendance at a local academic institution on non-duty time throughout the 4-year training program.
