Work environment

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) helps ensure the agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products industries can compete in domestic and international markets, deriving economic returns to the sector and the Canadian economy as a whole. Through its work, the Department strives to help the sector maximize its long-term profitability and competitiveness, while respecting the environment and the safety and security of Canada's food supply. The activities of the Department extend from the farmer to the consumer, from the farm to global markets, through all phases of producing, processing and marketing of agriculture and agri-food products.

The successful candidate will join a diverse research team to work on the project titled “Reducing sediment, N and P loading from arable cropping systems to receiving waters in eastern Canada (PEI, NB, NS, QC)”. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and enhancing the sediment and water sourcing techniques to expand its use in Black Brook Watershed, a watershed in the center of the potato production region of New Brunswick, Canada.

Sediment finger-printing and water sourcing techniques have been used in various environments to quantify the sources of sediment and water passing through a given point in the stream. Challenges we are facing include: 1) increasing both the spatial and temporal resolutions of the assessment so that beneficial management practices can target on the most sensitive places at the most sensitive time; and 2) building the linkages between sediment and water sourcing so we can understanding the whole system better.
