     The James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center Extended Care Program is recruiting for 1 (one) Nursing Assistant (NA) in the Community Living Center.  The NA assists in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in long term care setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse. The incumbent communicates orally with residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new NAs by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting. The incumbent recognizes and reacts to emergent resident care situations and intervenes while waiting for assistance to include recognizing the need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis etc.

    Nursing Assistant-Full time-Nights 11:30pm-8am

    Responsibilities


    This is the full performance level for Nursing Assistant, at this grade level incumbent functions as a member of the Nursing Care team and assist licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/resident receiving outpatient care, home or community living care or other patient/residents who are in acute, sub acute or chronic states of illness. At this grade the incumbent will provide hygienic care, positioning patients, assistance with ADL-checking and monitoring a patient receiving blood components- vital signs, neurological and vascular checks, post mortem care, assisting with examinations, diagnostic and therapeutic tests, reporting and recording significant signs, symptoms or behavioral changes in the patient.  Use aseptic technique principles during transportation of patient to required destination. Handling and delivery of blood specimens to the lab, report and record results appropriately, monitor residents for adverse reactions, reinforce patient/family/significant other teaching which has been initiated by professional staff. Assist with feeding and setting up residents for meal time.  Serves as an advocate of patient/family and significant others, responds to questions by patient, family and significant openly; responds to patient call for assistance. Complete all yearly mandatories timely; ensures general cleanliness, neatness and safety of patients' immediate environment. Removes trash and medical waste from patient central area for transport and disposal; observation of areas for safety hazards; reporting needs for repairs or more intensive EMS intervention via DHCP to appropriate service, etc.; terminal cleaning of beds vacated by discharge or transfer.
