These positions involve a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-06. At the GS-05 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-06. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.
These positions are located within the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) at the Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System in Los Angeles, CA. The Medical Supply Technician will assist with quality assurance throughout the SPS, assist with inventorying and reprocessing of reusable medical equipment (RME) and assume continuous training in support of all customers of SPS such as the operating room (OR), clinics, wards and other RME users throughout the Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare System.
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Disassembles containers, sets and individual instruments as necessary in preparation for decontamination procedures;
- Uses extreme care and follows established procedures to avoid damage to all RME, utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) and practices universal/standard precautions to prevent cross contamination, injuries, illnesses and infections to patients and staff members;
- Inspects items prior to cleaning for defects that could cause further damage;
- Removes gross contamination and bioburden on instruments and equipment utilizing approved enzymatic detergents, reusable and disposable brushes, sponges and flushing devices;
- Operates automated cleaning devices such as Ultrasonic Cleaners and Washer decontaminators;
- Inspects all items received from the decontamination area for cleanliness and functionality prior to packaging and/or sterilization;
- Packages and assembles instrument sets;
- Determines proper sterilization methods for all items to include correct sterilization cycles and exposure requirements such as time and temperature;
- Performs daily sterilizer testing and utilizes chemical and biological monitors as required;
- Inspects items prior to storage and rotates stock to prevent outdating of time related items; and
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
