    These positions are located in Zion National Park, in the Maintenance Division. Please visit find a park for additional park information.

    These positions are Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years.
    The anticipated seasonal entry-on-duty for Zion National Park is mid-November, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. We anticipate filling 3-6 positions.
    Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

    Responsibilities

    As a trail worker, demonstrates a working knowledge of trail maintenance and construction techniques, and is able to recognize and address trail maintenance problems. Incumbent must possess a strong knowledge of masonry tasks including the maintenance, repair and construction of a variety of walls, bridge abutments, causeways, rip-rap trail tread and other structures built of a variety of stone using dry and wet masonry techniques; must possess a working knowledge of timber carpentry skills involved with the use of chain saws and cross cut saws to fall, buck, notch and shape both native and dimensional lumber; must possess a working knowledge of trail maintenance operations, such as trail tread and drainage maintenance, trail corridor maintenance, etc. Cleans and maintains backcountry toilets. Promotes a positive and safe work environment. Operates a variety of equipment and hand tools common in trail work, such as: skid steer loaders, powered wheel barrows, rigging equipment, chain saw, gas powered hammer drill, cross cut saw, Pulaski, mcleod, single and double jacks, cement mixers, etc. Operates heavy duty 4x4 crew cab trucks while pulling a loaded trailer. Works around helicopters used to transport materials and equipment.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The incumbent(s) must possess good coordination and endurance for operation of vehicles, equipment and power/hand tools. The incumbent(s) will be subjected to some degree of strain when operating vehicles and equipment for extended periods of time over rough surfaces and uneven terrain. The incumbent(s) frequently lift, push, pull and carry items weighing 50 to 300 pounds. He/she may lift and carry tools and materials weighing upwards of 80 pounds and hike up to 15 miles per day carrying heavy loads. This requires good physical condition. Work sites may be at elevations ranging from 4,000 to 10,000 feet above sea level.
    WORK ENVIRONMENT: Nearly all work is performed outdoors in extreme temperature ranges with exposure to rain, snow, direct sun, dust and loud noises. Work sites will mainly be in the backcountry with overnight camping during regularly scheduled tours of duty.
    AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. The climate is generally HOT with daytime temperatures averaging 100 in the summer and 55 in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 85 in the summer to 30 in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah located (2) miles from Park Headquarters. Full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane (25 miles), St. George, 45 miles) and in Cedar City, Utah (63 miles). Elementary school (grades K-6) is available in Springdale with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane with bus service provided. Dixie State University is located in St. George and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City.
