This position is a full-time TERM appointment, not-to-exceed 13 months.  Possible extensions to this appointment, up to four (4) years total service, may be authorized subject to agency needs and funding.
POSITION LOCATION:  Appomattox, Virginia is a small rural community with churches, schools, stores, and doctors available locally. Larger cities are approximately 25-30 miles away with hospitals and more entertainment activities. Average winter temperatures range from 30-40 degrees with snow and ice; average summer temperatures range from 60-90 degrees with humidity. Duties

This position performs duties in the areas of historic carpentry, painting, roofing, and masonry such as:

• Performs repairs to buildings and quarters; construct, install, repair, and replace items such as doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware, frame structures, windows, trim, and cabinets.
• Applies premixed paints or stains to masonry, gypsum board or wood surfaces.
• Patch and repair roofs consisting of built up tar and paper, metal, as well as wood shingled roofs and asphalt shingles.
• Performs masonry work of limited difficulty involving the maintenance, repair, construction, and/or stabilization of historic sites built on stone, mortar, or adobe and/or contemporary buildings, features or structures.
• Performs custodial and other laborer duties as needed.
• Required to operate government vehicles up to 20,000 pounds with automatic or manual transmissions.  A valid State Driver's License is required.

Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach and that require you to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.  Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.  Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present.  Required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.

Applicants must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X-118C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupation.
To be eligible for this position, you must meet the screen-out element as described in the occupational assessment questionnaire and as outlined below. Applicants who fail to meet the screen-out element will be rated ineligible, without further review. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS DEMONSTRATE HOW YOU POSSESS THE EXPERIENCE DESCRIBED BELOW.
The Screen-Out element for this position is: The ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker, WG-4749-05, without more than normal supervision where you must be able to perform duties associated with maintaining grounds, buildings, and utilities through the use of hand tools and light power tools; interpreting work orders and sketches to complete projects; operating and maintaining heavy-type power mowers; loading, unloading, and/or moving objects (20-40 pounds) using hand trucks or wheelbarrows; and operating vehicles with towed trailers.
In addition, applicants must meet the following condition of employment (mandatory):  Driver's License requirement: This position is frequently required to operate gas and diesel powered vehicles in the performance of day to day operations. A valid State Driver's License is required. If selected, you will be required to provide your state DMV record.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must show that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) necessary to perform the duties of this position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirement emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience regardless of whether compensation was received or whether the experience was gained in a part-time or full-time occupation.
VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE:  Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.  Visit SSS to check your status.
- All Federal employees are required by Public Law 104-134 to have federal payments made by Direct Deposit.
- A valid State Driver's License is required.
- Wearing the National Park Service uniform is required.
- Government housing is not available.
- May be required to occasionally work weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- Work will be full-time, 40 hours per week.
