The DHS Cybersecurity Internship Program is specially designed to provide graduate students with cybersecurity-focused assignments and expose students to the field of cybersecurity within the Department. Selected students will support the cybersecurity mission at one of the following DHS components: Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A), National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD), United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), and United States Secret Service (USSS).
This position may be eligible for a non-competitive conversion to a career or career-conditional or TERM (for up to four years) appointment, upon completion of the student's academic degree program and 640 hours of work related experience.
To be eligible for the Pathways Intern Program, individuals must have been accepted for enrollment or be enrolled and seeking a degree (masters, certificate, etc.) or have completed 2 academic years of graduate level education in a qualifying educational institution on a full or half time basis.
THIS POSITION IS NOT TO EXCEED SEPTEMBER 30, 2017, however it may be extended for up to 1 year.

Duties
As a Student Trainee (Information Technology) GS 2299 9/11, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

- Conducts risk assessments to identify possible security violations by analyzing computer assets and establishing security requirements based on possible countermeasures to achieve an optimum level of security.
- Executes and analyzes computer security plans and assist with access control techniques such trusted routers, gateways, or firewalls.
- Assists in developing contingency plans designed for computer security emergency response, backup, and recovery operations.
- Implements procedures to ensure protection of information transmitted to the organization, among internal organizations, and from the organization on local or wide area networks, the world-wide-web, or other communications modes.
- Utilizes security products to provide data integrity, confidentiality, authentication, non-repudiation, and access control of the network.
- Applies Information Technology (IT) security principles, methods, and security products to pto protect and maintain the availability, integrity, confidentiality, and accountability of information system resources and information processed throughout the system's life cycle.
- Evaluates, assess, or locally tests and approves hardware, software, and firmware products.
- Continuously identifies and analyzes threats and vulnerabilities to the information systems to maintain an appropriate level of protection.
- Utilizes current and future multi-level security products collectively to provide data integrity, confidentiality, authentication, non-repudiation, and access control of the network.
- Reports all incidents involving viruses, tampering, or unauthorized system entry to appropriate authority.
