THIS IS AN EXPEDITED HIRING AUTHORITY ANNOUNCEMENT. The Secretary of Defense Memorandum of 14 August 2012 designed healthcare professions as shortage and critical need positions, and to appoint qualified healthcare professionals. this announcement is open to accept resumes from candidates interested in helping the Department of the Navy meet our mission requirements for providing care for uniformed services' family members and retirees at Military Treatment Facilities around the globe.
The work of this position will provide continuity of conducting initial, periodic, and special Industrial Hygiene (IH) surveys, training and mentoring of new Industrial Hygiene Officers (IHOs) and Preventive Medicine Technicians (PMTs) and provide oversight to implementation and inputting of data into the Defense Occupational Environmental Health Readiness system Industrial Hygiene (DOEHRS-IH) module.
The selectee is responsible for providing independent and comprehensive IH services (including but not limited to written industrial hygiene reports) to ships within the area of responsibility (AOR), located at Naval Environmental Preventive Medicine Unit Five (NEPMU FIVE), San Diego, CA.

Duties

*Perform onsite initial, periodic, and special IH surveys
*Conduct workplace health hazards assessments
*Train and mentor new Hygiene Officers and Medicine Technicians
 *Investigate complex problems and situations to reduce or eliminate occupational illness and injuries
*Input data into Defense Occupational Environmental Health Readiness System Industrial Hygiene (DOEHRS-IH)

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered. This position has a Basic Education Requirement:
Degree in industrial hygiene or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science from an accredited college or university that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

Combination of education and experience--at least 12 semester hours of course work in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours as specified above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position.
 
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE for GS-11: Examples of this experience include: Using industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices to conduct professionally written industrial hygiene surveys; evaluate physical and chemical hazards such as noise, explosives, ionizing, and non-ionizing radiation, ventilation, pesticides within a workplace environment; utilize and calibrate industrial hygiene measurement equipment such as indoor air quality meters, infrared analyzers, and moisture meters to evaluate environment stresses; provided recommendations to eliminate or reduce stresses for chemical and physical agents within work environments.                                                    OR
Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D degree or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE for GS-12: Examples of this experience include: Using industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices to conduct professionally written industrial hygiene surveys to eliminate or reduce chemical and physical stressors within work environment; conduct industrial hygiene inspections of workplace environments to assess work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers; conduct training programs; evaluate physical and chemical hazards such as noise, explosives, ionizing, and non-ionizing radiation, ventilation, pesticides within a workplace environment; utilize and calibrate industrial hygiene measurement equipment such as indoor air quality meters, infrared analyzers, and moisture meters to evaluate environment stresses.

Certification: ABIH Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)" is desired, but
not required."

 Physical Demands:
* Work involves walking, standing, and climbing to reach various jobsites. The work requires the selectee to carry ladders, awkward sampling equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and it involves extended periods of standing and walking during surveys. Selectee must be able to climb into manholes and other confined spaces.
