Duties

This position is assigned to the Mobile Care Unit of Guest Relations Service at the VA New Jersey Healthcare System; there is one vacancy available at the East Orange campus and one vacancy available at the Lyons campus. The individual selected for this position is responsible for the safe and efficient transport of patients (to/from appointments) that are ambulatory, in wheelchairs, stretchers, medical beds, or other transport. Some of the main duties and responsibilities of this position include (but are not limited to):

• Transport patients in the nursing home/inpatient wards to and from appointments
• Accurately annotate transport information
• Raise or lower stretchers, wheelchairs and medical beds to heights appropriate for transport
• Assist patients into escort equipment
• Assist and support the Nursing staff
• Answer dispatch requests through fax or phone calls
• May transport laboratory specimens when requested by supervisor
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (http://ift.tt/1fuPbMF). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work performed requires continuous standing, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting and pushing. The incumbent is required to push and pull wheelchairs and other equipment weighing up to 400 pounds; is required to push and pull beds and equipment, with assistant, weighing up to 1000 pounds; and also required to lift and transfer, with assistance, patients to and from beds weighing up to 600 pounds. Work is performed in various areas of the hospital building complex and at times, the incumbent may be exposed to heat and/or cold.
