Duties


The Claims Assistant works as a member of a Veterans Service Center team in the Louisville Regional Office, Louisville KY. The Incumbent is responsible for the care and maintenance of the claims folder and insures that all pertinent records and document are preserved and are neatly and orderly filed in chronological order:
Major Duties:
· Analyzes claims and determines if disposition of claim and control action has been appropriately identified.
· Utilizes VA system development capabilities, prepares various types of correspondence through office automation.
· Explains Veterans benefit programs and entitlement criteria to veterans, dependents and others. Screens initial claims for benefits.
· Generate correspondence that will be understood by the claimant.
· Evaluates all facts and evidence and applies pertinent laws, precedents and regulations to determine entitlement or development needed.
· Utilizes agency specific software systems to perform job and Microsoft Word. Composes and releases various types of correspondence.
· Establishes and maintains veteran's claims folders. Creates and updates control actions to include BDN, CAPS and other agency-related software.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work is mostly sedentary. However, there may be some walking, standing, and carrying of light items such as papers, books, claims folders, and files from one desk to another or for returning to storage. Carts are utilized to carry large number of claims folders. This will require the incumbent to push or pull the cart from one area to another.
