The National Field Office is responsible for the inspection and grading of dairy products. The incumbent performs equipment sanitary design evaluations and plant survey inspections of dairy processing plants by evaluating plant premises, equipment, operations and products to determine compliance with official specifications and resulting eligibility for official plant approval. The incumbent also performs final grading and inspection of butter, cheese, or other dairy products.

 Salary Information:  First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the lowest rate of the salary range for the grade selected.

Location Negotiable after Selection is Made.

Duties


The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Conducts field review of sanitary designs for dairy processing equipment and processing facilities. Reviews and evaluates blueprints and design drawings of proposed equipment/facilities at plant locations and makes initial determinations of whether proposed equipment/facilities are practical and feasible and are in accordance with program specifications and requirements.
  • Evaluates prototype or production models of equipment presented for review at the fabricator's location or at dairy processing facilities and makes recommendations as to whether equipment should be approved for use at plant locations receiving grading/inspection services.
  • Consults with design engineers, sales representatives, installers, or dairy plant management on sanitary aspects of facilities and equipment designs to assure that program standards are met. Prepares written reports documenting the results of the reviews and consultations, and makes recommendations to the Equipment Specialist for action.
  • Makes a methodical check and evaluation of the plant's facilities, processing equipment, processing and packaging methods, sanitary procedures, and quality improvement program for the raw milk going into the manufacture of its products.
  • Prepares detailed inspection reports covering a large number of carefully examined items in each inspection to determine plant compliance with the General Specifications. From this plant survey report, the National Field Director assigns eligibility for product grading status to the plant and places eligible plants on the official published list of approved plants.
  • Applies and interprets official standards, contract specifications, and instructions in the inspection of grading of butter, cheese, dry milk and other dairy or related non-dairy products according to the degree and intensity of such factors as, flavor, body, texture, color, finish and appearance; determines the final U .S. Grade according to official Grade standards for each lot and unit thereof; and prepares graders' memoranda, sampling reports and/or official certificates for product inspected or graded
  • Checks accuracy of scales for weighing and establishes an accurate tare weight of packaging material; weighs samples of product recording the weights and computes and certifies the tare and net weight for the lot tested.
