CMS Confirms Error in PDPM SNF PPS Interrupted Stay MDS Coding Edit – Provides Work-Around Instructions Until a Software Fix is Released

Recently AHCA has been receiving questions from members that have been receiving Minimum Data Set (MDS) “error” messages when attempting to code the MDS for an Interrupted Stay in MDS Item fields A0310G1 and A2400 per instructions provided the MDS-RAI Manual v1.17.1 (October 2019).  The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has acknowledged that there is a consistency edit error in the data submission specifications provided to software vendors.  Until CMS can fix the coding, they are instructing providers to complete Interrupted Stay MDS assessments using the following “work-around”.

Work-Around Instructions:  When a provider determines that MDS Item A0310G1 = 1, then providers should code MDS Item A2400 = 0 until further instructions are provided when the fix is implemented.
