The Parliamentary Protective Service (PPS) is a separate employer and is not subject to the Public Service Employment Act (PSEA). PPS has its own classification, compensation system, and a different staffing regime. As such, we use a different staffing process and terminology. Persons appointed to PPS continue to be part of the federal government and will receive competitive benefits including the federal government pension and dental plans.
Duties
The Parliamentary Protective Service is responsible for physical security within the Parliamentary Precinct and on the grounds of Parliament Hill. The Parliamentary Protective Service; protects members of parliament and senators, employees and visitors in the Parliamentary Precinct; keeps the peace; maintains order; enforces respect for Parliamentary rules and procedures; and promotes security and safety measures in all buildings within the Parliamentary Precinct.The Detection Specialist is a member of the Parliamentary Protective Service and performs the vital role of identifying questionable, prohibited and restricted items through detection and reporting during the scanning process in designated buildings, predominantly where Members of Parliament conduct their business. The Detection Specialist is responsible for the enforcement of scanning regulations with visitors seeking access to the Parliament buildings and for the detection and prevention of questionable, restricted and prohibited items from entering these buildings. The incumbent receives and directs visitors through the electronic screening equipment. The incumbent will also be part of an integrated protective posture that controls access and will require scanning for all vehicles on Parliament Hill.
Work environment
The PPS is a new parliamentary employer that was formed on June 23, 2015. It brings together former Senate and House of Commons Protection Services employees and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) National Division into a unified security service. The PPS is responsible for physical security throughout the Parliamentary Precinct and on the grounds of Parliament Hill. As such, the PPS protects members of parliament and senators, employees and visitors in the Parliamentary Precinct; keeps the peace; maintains order; enforces respect for Parliamentary rules and procedures; and promotes security and safety measures in all buildings within the Parliamentary Precinct.Intent of the process
The purpose of this recruitment and selection process is to establish a pool of qualified or pre-qualified candidates to staff multiple positions on an indeterminate basis. Reliability Status security clearance - Reliability Status security clearance - Enhanced Security Clearance – Failure to obtain successful pre-employment screening (site access clearance) results may affect employment opportunities with the PPS. All candidates must obtain the Enhanced Reliability Status to maintain their employment which consists of two components: a security interview and a background investigation.

- Who do not have valid second language evaluation results (SLE) will be assessed;
- Must pass all aspects of the training program in order to be eligible for the position;
- Must obtain and maintain an enhanced reliability status to be eligible for the position;
- Will be required to work shift work (days, evenings and nights) on a rotational basis, on weekends and, if necessary, to work overtime on short notice;
- Will be required to wear a uniform, equipment and tools while on duty (supplied by the Parliamentary Protective Service);
- Must have achieved a good level of fitness prior to applying in order to meet the physical demands of the job;
- Must have Canadian citizenship or be a permanent resident of Canada.
A variety of assessment tools may be used to assess selected applicants.
The prerequisites, asset qualifications, operational requirements and organizational needs may be used, all or in part, and become factors in the screening and the selection of applicants for this position.
