Duties

Conducts repairs, maintenance, and inspections of contemporary and historic facilities, structures, equipment, machinery, and mechanical equipment/components at locks, bridges, dams, and other structures/facilities on a Parks Canada protected heritage canal/waterway; identifies and reports on requirements for skilled trade or more advanced repair and maintenance; and performs administrative tasks.

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

Parks Canada manages five historic canals stretching from Montreal to the St. Lawrence, Richelieu and Outaouais rivers. These canals are situated in three important tourism regions in the province and also have numerous collaborations with important stakeholders and partners.

This process will be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with various tenures to staff this position for term period or permanent.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Vocational education diploma (DEP) or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
Degree equivalency
Recent and significant experience in the maintenance or construction of buildings, structures and land.

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

French essential
Information on language requirements
Basic knowledge of common calculations and measurements used in construction.
Knowledge of materials and products used in construction.
Knowledge of work methods related to the maintenance of buildings, structures and mechanisms.
Knowledge of workshop and construction site safety standards.
Basic knowledge of the operation of various equipment such as tractor, row boat and pontoon.
Ability to prepare estimates and requisition for services.
Ability to perform a variety of general and semi-specialized maintenance work on buildings, structures and
land.
Ability to use electrical tools and hand tools.
Ability to conduct inspections and determine the repairs / improvements required.
Ability to plan and prioritize work according to service requirements.
Ability to read and interpret work instructions, shop drawings and/or plans and specifications.
Makes things happen.
Exercises sound judgment.
Communicates effectively.
Takes responsibility.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Obtain and maintain Reliability Status
Hold a valid Class-5 driver’s licence.
Obtain a valid Class 3 driver's license within 12 months.
Obtain and maintain an Enhanced Reliability Check.
Wear a Parks Canada uniform.
Be able to perform inspections in high places and/or enclosed spaces and/or areas difficult to access under all weather conditions.
Availability for periods of on-call work and overtime.
Willing and able to do work that involves strenuous physical labour.
