Duties

Assist with the preparation, planting, maintaining and harvesting cereal, forage, pulse and oilseed Breeder Seed plots in field operations. Some equipment required to be operated are; 50 HP tractors, mowers, plot seeders and small plot combines, and small grain cleaners. Data collection during seeding, roguing, harvest, seed conditioning using manual methods. Assist with seed conditioning, packaging, preparation of Breeder Seed order shipments to various stakeholders and seed testing labs. Additional duties can be assigned by the supervisor to meet the needs of the SIU.

Intent of the process

Immediate staffing need:
- 1 full time term position (7 month duration)

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used for similar permanent and temporary employment for the location indicated for this process.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, and there is a temporary need, he/she may be considered for acting or assignment/secondment opportunities. The approval of his/her substantive supervisor will be required before acting/assignment/secondment is offered.

You must meet all essential qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Other qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives.
Degree equivalency
Experience operating vehicles, farm/agricultural equipment, and ground equipment such as mowers (self propelled & tractor pulled) and vegetation trimmers.
Experience maintaining grounds, mechanical equipment, and buildings.
Experience in a warehouse environment, including inventory management, seed storage on designated shelving, good housekeeping skills, and working around a forklift.

Ability to perform mathematical calculations and maintain records.

Pesticide Applicator’s licence issued by a provincially/territorially certified agency.
Canadian Seed Institute certification as a Licensed Operator and Accredited Grader for Grade Table Groups 1, 2, 3 & 4.
Forklift Operator’s License issued by a provincially certified agency.
Experience handling agricultural chemical products.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Ability and willingness to work overtime including evenings and weekends.
Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work, including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 25 kg).
Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise).
Ability and willingness to control allergies, through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and this must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
Ability and willingness to obtain a Pesticide Applicator’s License issued by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture within eighteen months of appointment.
Ability and willingness to obtain Canadian Seed Institute certification as a Licensed Operator and Accredited Grader for Grade Table Groups 1, 2, 3 & 4 within eighteen months of appointment.
Ability and willingness to obtain a Forklift Operator’s Licensed issued by a provincially certified agency within one year of appointment.
