• Summary

  The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is calling on those who want to help protect American interests and secure our Nation. DHS Components work collectively to prevent terrorism; secure borders and our transportation systems; protect the President and other dignitaries.
  
  The National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD), an office within DHS Headquarters, leads the national effort to protect and enhance the resilience of the nation's physical and cyber infrastructure. This position may reside in any NPPD subcomponent, including the Federal Protective Service, Office of Infrastructure Protection, Office of Biometric Identity Management, Office of Cyber and Infrastructure Analysis, Office of the Under Secretary, or the Office of Cybersecurity and Communications.
  
  This is a Pathways Student Intern Program position and is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school. Veteran's Preference will be applied in filling positions under the Pathways Programs.

  Responsibilities

  Major duties in this Student Trainee position include, but are not limited to:
  

  • Performing a variety of clearly assigned duties as a Student Trainee (Human Resources) to increase the employee's knowledge and understanding of the functions of Human Resources and provides a general familiarity with governing policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
  • Receiving training in the principles, concepts, work processes, and regulations of one or more functional areas of Human Resources.
  • Receiving on-the-job and classroom training in the application of concepts, principles, practices, and procedures of Civilian Human Resources.
  • Providing support to specialists in all areas of Human Resources management.
  • Manipulating and retrieving personnel data from various personnel databases for reports or other uses by HR Specialists.

  New employees must serve a one year probationary period.
  
  PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION:
  Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the internship program.
  
  To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:
  - Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program
  - Complete degree requirements within one year of your internship appointment date.
  - Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
  - Must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA throughout the entire internship appointment
  - Perform their job successfully.
  - Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance.
  - In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640 hour requirement.
  - Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work experience hours.
  

  Qualifications

  For this position you must meet the Pathways Internship Eligibility and Minimum Qualification requirements.
  
  Pathways Internship Eligibility
  You must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and be currently enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, on at least a half-time schedule as a student at an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs (e.g., graduate school, law school); or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a degree or certificate. Certificate programs must be one academic year in duration.
  
  
  Minimum Qualifications
  
  For the GS-04 grade level (starting salary $32,428):
  Have completed two full academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree. (Please submit transcripts).
  --OR--
  
  Have one year of general experience in a office setting to providing support to staff using computers to prepare documents, extract, revise, or sort information from files, records, or databases.
  --OR--
  
  A combination of education and general experience as described above which when combined are equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirement. Only education beyond high school may be used in this calculation.

  
  
  For the GS-05 grade level (starting salary $36,281):

  Have completed four academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. (Please submit transcripts).
  --OR--
  
  Have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 level in the Federal service performing the following duties: Answering general inquiries regarding HR functions and supporting HR personnel by utilizing office automation software to complete assignments.
  --OR--
  
  A combination of education and specialized experience as described above which when combined are equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirement. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

  National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
  
  Current or Former Political Appointees: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
  
  Qualifications Must Be Met
  The qualification requirements listed above must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
  
  
  One full academic year of undergraduate; graduate; vocational; trades; technical or high school education is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university or school to represent 1 year of full-time study. The high school curriculum must be approved by a State or local governing body. All education beyond high school must be accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

  Education

  Are you qualifying based on education? Submit a copy of your college transcript (unofficial is acceptable) or a list of coursework with hours completed. Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet Federal qualification requirements if you can show that your foreign education is comparable to education received in accredited educational institutions in the United States. For example, specific courses accepted for college-level credit by an accredited U.S. college or university, or foreign education evaluated by an organization recognized for accreditation by the Department of Education as education equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. college or university.
