Physical Demands
Ashore, the demands are minimized as the work is performed in an office setting but sea duty involves more rigorous demands including extensive climbing of ladders, occasional moderate to heavy lifting.
Incumbent must be able to maintain balance on an unsteady platform for days or weeks at a time.
Sea and aircraft duty is required and can expose the employee to fatigue caused by long hours and interrupted sleep.
Incumbent cannot be seriously prone to motion sickness.
Work Environment
Incumbent may perform up to 50% of work assignments in the field aboard survey ships, aircrafts and/or at remote land sites.
Incumbent will be exposed to extreme weather conditions, unsteady lifting and injury from flying or sliding objects frequently.
Work environment involves high risks with expose to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety precautions.
When deployed in the field living accommodations, comforts and recreational activities are sometimes sub-standard.
Qualifications

TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO QUALIFY: All applicants must meet the basic requirement. Applicants who meet the basic requirement described in the individual occupational requirements are fully qualified for the specified entry grade (generally grade GS-5).
Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
Basic Requirements for Physical Scientist (1310):
A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
Basic Requirements for Oceanographer (1360):
A. Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences. OR
Basic Requirements for Mathematician (1520)
A. Degree: mathematics; or the equivalent of a major that included at least 24 semester hours in mathematics. OR Note: Course work in either A or B must have included differential and integral calculus in addition, four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses a a prerequisite.

Education
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the qualification requirements if the applicant can provide documentation indicating that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
