Summary
The selectee for this position will serve as a Student Trainee Apprentice for NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.
These positions are covered by a formal training plan. The Student Trainee Apprenticeship programs are full-time, paid, on-the-job work experiences that include trade training courses and academic college credit courses with qualified periodic pay increases during the training period. In addition, the programs provide an opportunity to obtain state/federal journeyperson status, as well as accumulating college level credits. These programs encompass 40-hour skill based and classroom training per workweek. The academic
courses will be completed on an after hours (non-pay) basis in a community college environment. The course requirement will be up to 30 credits. Selected apprentices must be willing and able to attend evening classes for up to two nights a week for approximately 3-4 hours per night, for a period of at least three to four years, including summers. Trainees will be responsible for their own transportation both to and from the workplace, and the college's campus. All academic tuition, fees, and book costs are paid by NFPC, with a provision that the trainee receives a grade of "C" or better while completing academic
course work. Initially, employed at the pay rate of WG-02 ($17.22 per hour), the apprentice earns a competitive and advancing wage while progressing to the level of journeyperson. Your advancement in the Apprentice Program will be dependent upon successful completion of both the formal education and apprenticeship training in the assigned trade.
These positions have promotion potential to the journey level positions at the WG-10, WG-11, and WG-14 level (earning $24.97 - $28.46) per hour by today's salary schedule).
Expected entrance on duty will be approximately January to March 2018.
Applicants selected for the Apprenticeship Program will be required to sign a Continued Service Agreement to work within the Naval Foundry and Propeller Center for two years after completion of the four year Apprenticeship Program. http://ift.tt/2yCpoSQ

The successful selectee will perform the following duties:
- Machinist, WG-3414: A machinist will set up the fixtures and work pieces and operates machine and machine tools to complete machining operations to surfaces; lay out and cut in blades and filets from rough propeller casting and determines the pitch, rake, skew and track of blades by mechanical and mathematical means.
- Foundry Molder, WG-4373: A foundry molder fabricates and shapes molds out of sand, synthetics and cement and operate mold making machines such as cement mixer mill, tilt machine and rollover machine.
- Patternmaker, WG-4616: A pattern maker will plan and lay out for fabrication and assembly of patterns and core boxes working from blueprints and castings. Fabricates and assembles patterns and core boxes. Visualize finished products to plan for the type of pattern or core box to use.
- Rigger, WG-5210: Utilizes chainfalls, blocks and tackles, winches, cables and other mechanical devices to safely move items, ranging from a few pounds to those weighing several tons.
- Welder, WG-3703: Performs various welding processes to weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals including alloys in the repair of castings, weld fabrications and general shop repairs.
- Metals Inspector, WG-3801: Conducts nondestructive testing on metals in the fields of visual, eddy current, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, radiography, and ultrasonic inspections, ensuring a quality product.
