About the Position:
The New York District Headquarters office is located at 26 Federal Plaza in downtown Manhattan just minutes from Wall Street, Chinatown, Little Italy and SOHO. The building is also known as the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building. The building is surrounded by federal, city and state court and office buildings in the heart of lower Manhattan. The major intersection is Broadway and Duane Streets. Public transportation is available to and from all New York City boroughs and surrounding areas.
This Survey Technician position with the US Army Corps of Engineers-New York District, Operations Division, Operations Branch Support and Survey Section located in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey. Who May Apply: U.S. Citizens
As a Survey technician on a survey team, you will operate instruments and apply surveying techniques for topographic surveys in support of the planning, design, and construction of civil works projects and/or in support of the remediation of hazardous and toxic waste (HTW) sites; as well as, in support of hydrographic surveys to determine the relief of the bottom of a body of water or channel, surveys of shorelines for purposes of protection or repair. Additionally, you will perform duties including, but not limited to:
Establishing elevations on monuments, computers level net closures and tie the monuments into a database such as the National Geodetic Vertical Datum.
Utilizing survey equipment such as Global Positioning Satellite Systems (GPS), hydrographic collection, and hydrographic editing software to complete surveys.
Performing routine hydrographic and beach surveys for condition and beach fill- with assistance.
Selecting, calibrating, and using electronic data collection systems.
Collecting, assembling, and correlating technical data for surveying and mapping purposes.
Travel Required
25% or less - Travel requires 25% temporary duty travel throughout the district
Must obtain and maintain a valid State issued drivers license

Employee is required to be trained and to keep training current in proper procedures and equipment to be used on Hazardous and Toxic Waste (HTW) sites.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work requires 95% travel among various survey sites. The employee works aboard small boats, along the shore line, over rough terrain, on sites contaminated by hazardous and toxic waste, and in adverse weather conditions. Physical effort is required in probing operations and in carrying surveying tools and equipment and in launching and retrieving small boats and clearing brush obstructions from line of sight and reference points. Employee is required to wear floatation devices while working aboard boats.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes experience using automated systems to compile technical data, coordinating with command staff and higher echelon, analyzing data to run reports, selecting the most efficient surveying approach from several alternatives, redirecting team efforts in response to field conditions, and arriving at sound and competent technical and administrative decisions for a wide variety of problems.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:
Ability to analyze and interpret data
Knowledge of basic surveying principles
Knowledge of various geodetic and topographic techniques
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above ; in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Completion of one full year of graduate education in an accredited college or university consisting of any of the following courses in surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. meets the requirements for GS-7. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
