OIG Finds Kansas Did Not Always Verify Correction of Deficiencies of Nursing Homes
Lilly HummelAs part of a series of state reviews, the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) released a report finding that Kansas did not always verify correction of deficiencies identified during surveys of nursing homes participating in Medicare and Medicaid. Of those nursing homes surveys that OIG reviewed, they found that the state: did not always obtain the nursing homes’ evidence of correction, could not provide sufficient evidence of actions taken by the nursing homes, and did not conduct the required standard survey within 15 months of the previous standard survey. OIG recommended that the state improve its practices for verification, update controls and policies and procedures to ensure that survey system data are protected, and develop a correction plan to ensure consecutive surveys are conducted in a timely basis.
OIG has conducted a similar review of other states. The report found similar deficiencies in Arizona and Washington, while Missouri and Oregon’s verification processes were approved.
