The NASA Pathways Intern Program provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience.
The Applied Engineering and Technology Directorate (AETD) provides the multidisciplinary engineering expertise needed to enable end-to-end conceptualization, development, and use of Earth and space science missions, and provides leadership and vision to advocate and implement a broad range of advanced technology activities in order to meet current and future space and Earth science mission needs.

This position is part of the NASA Pathways Intern Program which is a formal training program.
As a Pathways Engineering Intern, you will work under the guidance of, and assist engineering professionals and/or nontechnical personnel in progressively responsible duties which are related to your academic studies. You will perform well-defined tasks of a developmental nature in engineering disciplines .
We will fill multiple Pathways Engineering Intern positions in various organizations. Assignment of students will be made to following organizations:
Mechanical Systems Analysis & Simulation Branch - Duties may include systems analysis and simulation for space flight systems development, including analysis of structural loads and dynamics, thermomechanical and optomechanical analyses, and research, development, and maintenance of advanced computation capabilities for systems analysis and simulation of flight systems.
Contamination & Coatings Engineering Branch - Duties may include contamination and coating systems level technical support, ground and on-orbit specific contamination engineering and thermal coating assessments, flight qualification and space environmental testing, and development and modification of thermal control coatings and application techniques.
Optics Branch - Duties may include optical component and system development, including design, fabrication, verification, system integration and testing, and assisting with design and analysis including polarization, radiometry, system modeling and analysis, stray light, and tolerancing.
Cryogenics & Fluids Branch - Duties may include design and development of low temperature cooling systems and related technologies for space flight applications, materials testing at cryogenic temperatures, cryogenic thermal analysis and mechanical design, development of Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerators (ADR) to achieve sub-Kelvin temperatures, and cryogenic fluid handling.
Laser & Electro-Optics Branch - Duties may include research and development of laser instrument systems and components for science and spacecraft applications, system testing and qualification, nonlinear harmonic generation, Light Imaging, Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) and spectrometer instruments, and free space optical communication systems.
Flight Data Systems & Radiation Effects Branch - Duties may include assessing the natural space radiation environment effects on electronic components and materials, radiation hardness assurance engineering, requirements definition, radiation testing of devices and systems, analysis of radiation effects on performance and reliability, and development of mitigation approaches.
Instrument Electronics Development Branch - Duties may include design, development, and testing of electronics systems for space flight science instruments, analog and digital electronics, mixed-signal application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), algorithms and code for digital signal processing applications, formulation of instrument electronics systems architectures, and performing verification testing.
Flight Software Systems Branch - Duties may include development of embedded software products that enable spacecraft hardware, science instruments and flight components to operate as an integrated on-orbit science observatory, including flight software and high fidelity simulation test systems, early mission formulations and designs, requirements analysis, development, verification and validation, and mission life-sustaining engineering.
Science Data Processing Branch - Duties may include the design, development, implementation, and integration of science data processing applications and science data processing technology, embedded science data processing, modeling/simulation, and data visualization.
Attitude Control Systems Engineering Branch - Duties may include creating and maintaining analysis tools for attitude control systems, attitude determination, and sensor calibration, and assessments of the stability, robustness, and performance of attitude control systems for spacecraft systems using analysis and simulations.
Propulsion Branch - Duties may include design, development, analysis, assembly, and testing advanced propulsion system technologies, performance evaluation, and anomaly assessment of flight projects for spacecraft propulsion subsystems and expendable launch vehicle propulsion systems.
