This is a key position within the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Duties

This position is located within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Office of the Principal Legal Advisor (OPLA).  This position is responsible for supervising a team of Legal Assistants, and clerical support staff, and for personally performing high-level Legal Assistant tasks in support of the OPLA mission.  This work is extremely time sensitive, is critical to the support of the work of Attorneys, and provides data gathering and analysis support for a variety of legal processes.  Typical work assignments include:

• Supervising the daily activity of a team of Legal Assistants and other clerical support staff;
• Performing basic research by reviewing and analyzing case materials, collecting related files for cases cited;
• Performing a variety of support functions related to tracking and managing Immigration Court dockets, preparing motions and appeals;
• Assisting Attorneys in preparing correspondence and basic motions; and
• Researching and gathering data from a variety of databases to provide the most current information related to immigration cases.

Qualifications

GS-09: You must meet the following to qualify at the GS-09 grade level:
Experience: One (1) year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal Service) , performing duties such as: gathering and preparing information for Immigration court proceedings by collecting information from numerous sources including database records; reviewing and analyzing case materials and locating, collecting, and compiling related information from files or cases cited; tracking and managing immigration court dockets, preparing motions and appeals; and assisting Attorneys in preparing correspondence and basic motions.
Typing Proficiency: In addition to the above minimum qualification requirements, applicants must be able to type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample, with three or fewer errors. You may self-certify your proficiency in the Occupational Questionnaire.

National Service Experience (i.e. volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Current or Former Political Appointees: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
