This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U. S. Coast Guard, Office of the Chief Administrative Law Judge in New York, NY.

Duties

You will provide support for the New York ALJ in the processing and presiding over of administrative proceedings for the U. S. Coast Guard and numerous other federal Agencies. You will also be responsible for reviewing and summarizing filings in computerized docketing systems; preparing and transmitting such items as notices, judgments and orders; and interacting with the public, including answering inquiries into case status and filing procedures. You will also perform special assignments such as responding to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) or record requests and processing FOIA appeals for DHS agencies.

Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable team member. Typical duties includes:
  • Reviewing complaints, pleadings, motions, petitions, FOIA requests, records of proceedings, and other similar legal transactions to ensure compliance with legal requirements and technical accuracy.
  • Independently draft routine legal documents approving settlement agreements, default orders, admission orders, and drafting correspondences via email to all parties.
  • Proofreading judge’s orders for grammar and substance to ensure overall readability and accuracy.
  • Determining and maintaining status for court cases for U.S. Coast Guard and other federal agency's proceedings. Maintaining docket calendars. Closing out case files or system of legal records, annotating indices and status records, compiling workload and status reports, and location and abstracting data from files and records.
  • Responding to inquiries and complex requests for current information on cases from judges, court administrators, client agencies, expert witnesses, parties to the cases, and the general public.
  • Establishing and maintaining case files containing charging documents, pleadings, interrogatories, requests to admit, requests for production or inspection, motions, affidavits, exhibits, evidence, court orders, settlement agreements and other general correspondence.
  • Applying the Privacy Act, FOIA Exemptions, and corresponding case law in preparation of FOIA responses.
