Duties

The Orthopedic Technician will be working at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, San Diego, CA. This position is located in the Nursing Service and the OPD Clinics.
Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

• Applies splints, put plaster and synthetic casts on patients, remove sutures, change dressings, and applies braces that are dispensed in the out-patient clinics;

• Adjusts, removes, repairs bivalve, wedge, and window casts;
• Reinforces the teaching of the medical information given by the physician regarding the specific injury, treatment plan, procedure, and expected outcomes;
• Makes and maintains accurate progress notes and records in charts for every patient encountered, documenting care provided;
• Preps and drapes patient after demonstrated competence;
• Assists in all common orthopedic surgical procedures, applies Continuous Passive Motion Machines in and out of the Operating Room;
• Performs wound care and debridement, splint extremities, applies and removes dressings and assesses condition of wounds;
• Outlines types of x-rays used in fracture diagnosis.

DESIGNATED DRUG TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified drug test result is received.
WORK SCHEDULE: MONDAY - FRIDAY, 8:00 A.M. TO 4:30 P.M.

Qualifications

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY:
In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
AND
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have one (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in Federal Service.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and this is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized Experience is: (a) anatomy, physiology and medical terminology; (b) different material and equipment in casts, splints, and braces; and (c) maintain patient health records.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: (A COPY OF TRANSCRIPT IS REQUIRED)
Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education or an internship that is directly related to the position of Orthopedic Technician. (COPY OF OFFICIAL/UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (A COPY OF TRANSCRIPT IS REQUIRED):
I have an equivalent combination of creditable experience and education as described above, to meet total qualification requirements for this position at the next lower grade level. (COPY OF OFFICIAL/UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

• Technical Competence

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Duties require regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing, reaching, and carrying supplies and similar activities. Duties require incumbent to be able to lift. Occasionally it may be necessary to lift supplies and objects weighing as much as 50 pounds. Requires use of proper body mechanics.
The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions. Incumbent will be working around machinery, irritant chemicals and exposed to patients who may be contagious. Incumbent is required to utilize standard precautions and personal protective equipment when at risk. Incumbent is required to observe normal safety practices with equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and adherence to fire regulation. Incumbent must be able to work in stressful situations.
