About the Position:
The Pharmacy Technician position is located in the Hematology Oncology section of the Pharmacy Service at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies and equipment weighing up to 40 lbs as well as bending/stooping. This position will also be handling hazardous drugs/materials and undergoing hazardous drug monitoring through the medical surveillance program. Workload can be demanding at times. Must be able to multitask while maintaining a high level of concentration.
This position has rotating shifts which may include evening, holidays, and weekends

Duties
The position involves work with technical/complex procedures in a clinical pharmacy, e.g., hematology/oncology. You will perform under the general oversight of a pharmacist or the on-call pharmacist or other licensed healthcare provider. Receive and independently interprets physician's orders for cancer chemotherapy and related therapies, IV admixtures and sterile products. Make required calculations and conversions to prepare strength and doses of medication. Prepare therapeutic, cytotoxic, and sterile drugs for inpatient and outpatient administration. Receive, review, and interpret prescriptions, determines type of substance, strength, dosage, and quantity to be dispensed in accordance with accepted practice and pharmacy standing operating procedures (SOPs). Maintain and update temperature log for medication refrigerators, pressure log for anteroom and clean room and monthly sterile environmental testing. You will act as preceptor to rotating technicians and trainees, and provides training on the preparation of chemotherapy and specialized products.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the education or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes preparing (compounding) drugs and sterile products (such as antineoplastic agents used in chemotherapy and investigational drugs); making required calculations and conversions to prepare appropriate strength and doses of medications; and maintaining sterile process and clean room. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as pharmacy, pharmacy administration, pharmaceutical management, pharmaceutical sciences, etc.

Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience.
