This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U. S. Coast Guard, Fifth Coast Guard District, in Portsmouth, VA.

Duties

This position provides a variety of general office clerical support duties.

Being a CG civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team. Typical work assignments include:

• Performing a wide variety of general office duties such as typing, filing, distributing mail, and answering/directing phone calls to appropriate personnel.
• Preparing and typing in final form, a variety of correspondence, letters, memoranda, recurring and one time reports from rough drafts, oral or written instructions requiring complex formats and various software packages.
• Maintaining files and reports involving many subject headings.

• Must be at least 16 years of age.

Qualifications

GS-5: Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the federal service or 4 years of education above high school or a combination of education and experience.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include: supporting an office by performing clerical or administrative duties such as typing correspondence, answering telephone inquiries, and maintaining a filing system.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
