About the Agency

This position is located in the Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Immediate Office of the Superintendent, Department of Waterfront Activities, Kings Point, New York. The Academy is a four-year degree granting institution of higher education accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Universities. The mission of the Academy is to teach students how to succeed in the maritime and transportation industries or the Armed Forces, while preparing them to receive a bachelor of science degree, a merchant marine license, and an appointment as a commissioned officer on reserve or active duty in the U.S Armed Forces.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of activities needed to operate, maintain, and repair a range of boats and vessels and provide upkeep and support of the waterfront environment. There is special emphasis in this position on engineering work, specifically engine maintenance and repair duties.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced professional who has experience maintaining and repairing equipment found in a waterfront environment.

Duties

The duties of The Marine Machinery Mechanic (Various Trades) include:

• Marine mechanic-type duties are performed on boats and vessels. Fiberglass fabrication on boat hulls, superstructures, decks, and components involves straight and curved surfaces and interconnecting parts and components. Marine electrical and electronic systems are maintained. Wood working extends from common carpentry tasks to superior wood crafting requirements. Metal working is required to maintain the waterfront and to duplicate boating parts, repair them, or to perform other metal working projects. Operating boats and vessels within the Basin and the immediate vicinity. Crane operation are required to lift boats from the water for maintenance, repair, launching, or storage activities.
• Dismantling, repairing, relocating, modifying, aligning and installing of a wide variety of marine machinery equipment. Repairs encompass all phases of assembly and disassembly and overhaul of motors, transmissions carburetors, electrical systems, accessories and attachments.
• Applying a through knowledge of, and skill in, applying a variety of techniques using experienced judgment, rough sketches, blueprints, manufacturer specifications, or oral instructions. Tasks require a detailed knowledge of the operating characteristics of the machinery, equipment, and systems in questions; their functional relationships; the applicable installation and repair procedures, methods, and trade practices.
• Maintaining and repairing gasoline cranes used for lifting boats, floats, heavy anchors, and equipment and keeping crane in a safe and operable condition. Metal working is required to maintain the waterfront and to duplicate boating parts, repair them, or to perform other metal working projects. Marine electrical and electronic system are maintained.
• Task(s) require a detailed knowledge of the operating characteristics of the machinery, equipment, and systems in questions; their functional relationships; the applicable installation and repair procedures, methods, and trade practices.
• Work involves installing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, testing, and lading new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls and equipment.

Qualifications

To quality for the Wage Grade -10, you must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties, which includes the following:

• You must have the ability to do the work of a Marine Machinery Mechanic (Various Trades) without more than normal supervision.
