Duties
There are multiple positions for the Social Services Assistant (SSA) works within the Veterans Crisis Line (VCL) to assist in the delivery of resource connection, telephone triage and support to the VCL telephone responders who need assistance. This position is located at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center in Canandaigua, NY. Some of the major duties of this position are:

- Assists in implementing triage telephone services to callers on a national level;
- Providing support for the identification for Veterans families and Veterans at high risk for burden and stress;
- Coordinates enhanced care as indicated with Supervisory Health Science Specialist, and Program Management guidance;
- Functions as a point of contact for the VCL Responders, national outside emergency services and national VA contacts;
- Communicates with 911 dispatchers, emergency responders, and Mental Health mobile units to get emergency assistance or contact information to Veterans;
- Relays mental health assessment information as well as problem solving to locate Veterans using various internet resources as well as location resources;
- Directly negotiates assistance for Veterans by relaying pertinent facts, important circumstances, such as whether the Veteran has a gun or is displaying threatening behavior, etc;
- Contacts Suicide Prevention Coordinators nationally through written correspondence and telephone calls;
- Conducts follow-up chart checks to ensure Veterans' consults are not lost in transition to local VA's;
- Presents real time reports to Crisis Responders and Supervisory Health Science Specialist of the Crisis Line/Call Center as required ensuring Veterans receive proper emergency intervention in any location in the country and abroad;
- Prepares and maintains case records in accordance with established guidelines; and
- All other duties as assigned.
