Because of the sensitive nature of these positions, those selected must undergo an extensive background investigation process before starting work. Estimated earliest time for completion of the investigation ranges from 3-6 months.
These positions are set aside for veterans. All preference eligible veterans determined to be qualified for the positions will be considered before any non-veteran. After all veterans have been considered, non-veterans may then be considered.
These positions are also being advertised via job announcement #MWE-17-MP-JEFF-064 to merit promotion eligibles government-wide, including VEOA eligibles, and to those eligible for non-competitive or excepted service hiring authorities such as VRA, former Peace Corps or VISTA, Schedule A, etc. Those who have served in the armed forces are encouraged to apply under both job announcements.
Duties
The Park Security Guard provides security services to the Gateway Arch Complex by monitoring and screening visitors as they enter the complex with the use of walk-through magna-scanners and scanning visitors' personal belongings with radiographic (x-ray) equipment. The Park Security Guard is normally the first person the visitor will encounter and the position requires a normal degree of tact and courtesy with the public contacts while ensuring compliance with pertinent rules and regulations governing facility access and physical security. The position is at a fixed post. Training is accomplished by using computer based training (CBT) programs. Basic skill in operating computers is helpful.
Physical Demands: Long periods of standing or sitting in limited space for 8 hours or more. Must also be able to lift 30 pounds continuously and 50 pounds occasionally. Must have correctable vision and the ability to distinguish between colors to operate screening software.
Work Environment: Works closely with others and in constant noise during days of heavy visitation. Work fluctuates between indoors within a climate controlled facility and outdoors performing package pre-screening functions on the Arch entrance ramp, roving patrols of grounds or stand in a fixed post. High stress environment due to hours and sheer volume of visitors with unknown potential risks associated with security screening operations. Operation of x-ray equipment exposes to a level of risk to radiation exposure therefore all safety procedures and other precautions are mandatory.
Area Information: The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (90 acres) is located in downtown St. Louis, Missouri on the banks of the Mississippi River. The park memorializes the city's role in westward expansion through the 630 foot Gateway Arch and underground Museum of Westward Expansion. The Old Courthouse commemorates the site where slave Dred Scott began his freedom suit, ultimately leading to the divisive U.S. Supreme Court decision that polarized the nation and became a leading cause of the Civil War. St. Louis is home to well over 100 parks and some 200 miles of cycling, running, and walking trails. Cultural institutions abound in St. Louis. In Forest Park alone, you'll find the Saint Louis Zoo, Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri History Museum, Saint Louis Science Center, the Municipal Opera and more.
