Because of the sensitive nature of these positions, those selected must undergo an extensive background investigation process before starting work.  Estimated earliest time for completion of the investigation ranges from 3-6 months.
These positions are set aside for veterans. All preference eligible veterans determined to be qualified for the positions will be considered before any non-veteran. After all veterans have been considered, non-veterans may then be considered.

Duties

The Park Security Guard provides security services to the Gateway Arch Complex by monitoring and screening visitors as they enter the complex with the use of walk-through magna-scanners and scanning visitors' personal belongings with radiographic (x-ray) equipment. The Park Security Guard is normally the first person the visitor will encounter and the position requires a normal degree of tact and courtesy with the public contacts while ensuring compliance with pertinent rules and regulations governing facility access and physical security. The position is at a fixed post. Training is accomplished by using computer based training (CBT) programs. Basic skill in operating computers is helpful.
Physical Demands: Long periods of standing or sitting in limited space for 8 hours or more. Must also be able to lift 30 pounds continuously and 50 pounds occasionally. Must have correctable vision and the ability to distinguish between colors to operate screening software.
Work Environment: Works closely with others and in constant noise during days of heavy visitation. Work fluctuates between indoors within a climate controlled facility and outdoors performing package pre-screening functions on the Arch entrance ramp, roving patrols of grounds or stand in a fixed post. High stress environment due to hours and sheer volume of visitors with unknown potential risks associated with security screening operations. Operation of x-ray equipment exposes to a level of risk to radiation exposure therefore all safety procedures and other precautions are mandatory.

The park memorializes the city's role in westward expansion through the 630 foot Gateway Arch and underground Museum of Westward Expansion. The Old Courthouse commemorates the site where slave Dred Scott began his freedom suit, ultimately leading to the divisive U.S. Supreme Court decision that polarized the nation and became a leading cause of the Civil War. Qualifications

To be eligible for this position, you must possess the following specialized experience before the closing date of this announcement:
Specialized Experience - One (1) year of specialized experience is required for this position. Specialized Experience is experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. Specialized experience demonstrates that you are able to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience may have been gained in the private or public sector and may have been paid or unpaid, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, Americorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education: For this position,  you may NOT substitute education for experience.
Time in Grade Requirements - Although you may advance without time restriction to the GS-5 level, if you have worked in a non-temporary GS position in the last 52 weeks, your position must not have been at less than the GS-3 level.



CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• You must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license as a routine motor vehicle operator. As such, you will be required to provide a copy of your state record of driving history prior to operation of a motor vehicle. 
• You will be required to wear the NPS uniform in accordance with NPS policy.
• You will be required to pass a physical exam certifying that you are capable of performing the duties of this position, including physical fitness, manual dexterity, vision and hearing requirements.
• You must be willing and able to operate x-ray machines to scan bags, packages, and persons.  Operation of x-ray machines requires computer-based training, correctable vision, and ability to distinguish colors.
• Males born after 12-31-1959 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service ( visit www.sss.gov ).
• New civilian employees of the federal government are required to complete a one year probationary period.
