About the Position:This position is with the Directorate of Emergency Services located at Aberdeen Proving Ground MD.

NOTE: This position is subject to the Lautenberg amendment to the gun control act of 1968 which makes it a felony for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence to ship, transport, possess, or receive firearms or ammunition. Civilian personnel of the Department of Defense are not exempt from this provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, selectee will be required to sign a form acknowledging understanding of this provision.

Non-veterans may be appointed to guard positions only if no qualified preference eligibles are available. Duties


As a Security Guard, you will perform access control and patrol duties on a military installation for the purpose of safeguarding Government personnel, information, operations, and critical assets in accordance with a wide variety of Federal rules and agency/local regulations/policies. In addition, you will:
  • Perform security guard duties in accordance with appropriate regulations to detect and prevent theft, damage, accident, trespass, sabotage and espionage and to enforce the security regulations of the installation.
  • Verify identification through use of identification cards, badges, biometrics, automated records, vehicle decals, verbal questioning, and other means.
  • As initial point of contact, answers brief visitor questions, determines whether appropriate authorization for access exists, and provides assistance.
  • Records visitor information and purpose of visit, as necessary; and may issue daily passes or refer visitor to another location to obtain special passes.
  • Conducts foot or vehicle patrol of perimeters, roadways, parking and other high traffic areas as well as interior of shops, storage administrative and other structures.
  • Reports accidents and incidents to police and take charge at the scene until their arrival.
  • Detains violators, identifies witnesses and renders first aid to the injured commensurate with training certification.
  • Receives instruction and training in the application of security procedures, laws, guard orders, vehicle operation, basic first aid including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), search and seizure, self-defense, riot control, use of weapons, recognition of intoxication, two-way communications equipment, and accident site preservation, use of force continuum and other forms of deadly force such as remotely activated anti-vehicle barriers, etc.
