This recruitment will be used to fill temporary appointment(s).  Appointment(s) are not to exceed 1039 hours in a twelve month period, although positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individual(s) selected under this vacancy announcement may be eligible for rehire in subsequent service years. Anticipated start date is June 2017.

Duties

MAJOR DUTIES: Serves as lead lifeguard for two protected beaches in the park and is responsible for public safety, water assists and rescues, enforcing beach regulations, assisting visitors with first aid, providing informational services and interpretation to beach users.  Supervises fresh water and ocean beach operations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbent must be able to swim long distances in open surf. He/she is expected to run in sand and maintain endurance to cope with saving a human life in strong ocean currents. Unusual exertions in rescue and first aid operations require endurance, emotional and mental stability.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The environment is an ocean or fresh water lakeside beach area. Extremes in temperature are common.  Ambient air temperatures of 90+ degrees F are recorded every summer and surf temperatures can be as low as 48 degrees F.  Incumbent is expected to sit through mild rainstorms and wind blown sand.
AREA INFORMATION: Acadia National Park is a favorite vacation destination for good reason. The views are spectacular. The landscape is pristine. And, the wildlife is plentiful and protected. As a result, Acadia National Park is one of the most visited national parks in the United States.  Acadia National Park protects more than 47,000 acres of lakes, ponds, mountains, and ocean shoreline along the coast of Maine. The 27-mile Park Loop Road system offers outstanding views of the park's ocean shoreline, coastal forests, and mountain silhouettes.  At Acadia you can explore the park's scenic 45-mile carriage road system or hike through forests and up mountains on 125 miles of historic hiking trails.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:  To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Tuesday, May 30, 2017.  Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors. You must include dates of employment (month and year) and hours worked per week to receive credit for your work experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. You will not receive credit for experience that does not indicate the exact hours worked per week or is listed as "varies". Part-time hours are prorated.
To qualify based on experience, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position would include performing lead lifeguard duties, group leader, counselor, teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, summer aid in a state park or national park.
As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position. To qualify based on education, you must have completed 9 semester hours of graduate education in courses directly related to the position (e.g. basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, outdoor recreation, etc.). Submit a copy of your transcript or list of courses with credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Applicants can verify accreditation HERE . 
Transcripts do not need to be official but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify then you will need to provide official transcripts before you enter on duty.

Requirements
1. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear the National Park Service lifeguard uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards.
2. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State drivers license.
3. This is a drug testing position. The individual selected for this position will be subject to and must pass a drug test prior to entrance on duty. Incumbents may be subject to random testing.
4. Under the Requirements of the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), all new Federal employees, must pass a background investigation. A (NACI) investigation will be initiated for those who do not already have this level of clearance. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
6. Applicants for lifeguard positions must pass the annual pre-employment performance test which includes the following: Swim 600 yards in less than 10 minutes, Swim 125 feet underwater with 4 breaths only, and run 1 1/2 miles in less than 12 minutes in one testing session.  For details of the performance test, contact Darren Belskis at 207-288-8791.
