Duties
The incumbent serves as a Pharmacy Technician in the Pharmacy Service Department located on the campus of the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, Long Beach, California. Acts as a pharmacy technician, under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, in a large multi-facility health care system, including inpatient, long-term care, teaching and research activities, and with outpatient clinic activities provided at five outpatient locations.
The primary function of the Pharmacy Technician will be to provide innovative and progressive pharmaceutical care to Veterans. It is critical that the incumbent display a caring and helpful attitude and provide exceptional customer service. The position function will include ensuring appropriate, safe and accurate medications are dispensed to Veterans in an efficient manner. The Pharmacy Technician will serve primary in outpatient pharmacy areas and provide a range of medication management and administrative services to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the professional staff by performing the following scope of assigned duties:
This medical center operates 24 hours, seven days per week and you may be required to work days, evenings, nights, holidays, and/or weekends, to include modification in shifts and/or tours of duty, to meet medical center and patient care needs.
The primary function of the Pharmacy Technician will be to provide innovative and progressive pharmaceutical care to Veterans. It is critical that the incumbent display a caring and helpful attitude and provide exceptional customer service. The position function will include ensuring appropriate, safe and accurate medications are dispensed to Veterans in an efficient manner. The Pharmacy Technician will serve primary in outpatient pharmacy areas and provide a range of medication management and administrative services to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the professional staff by performing the following scope of assigned duties:
- Provides exceptional customer service
- Accurately prepares and labels prescriptions including controlled substances for final review by a pharmacist according to established policies, procedures, and regulations regarding security and record keeping.
- Accurately receives new stock and returned stock into inventory according to established policies, procedures and regulations regarding inventory record keeping.
- Completes inventory functions according to established policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Correctly operates and maintains complicated pharmacy equipment and automation according to established policies and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Performs automatic stock replenishment, maintenance and operation of automated prepackaging storage and dispensing equipment.
- Accurately replenishes controlled and non-controlled substances in pharmacy automation.
- Assists pharmacy, medical center staff and patients, by phone, in person, or thru electronic means concerning drug distribution, refill requests, mail and general triaging of requests for pharmacists, and refers to pharmacy, medical staff, patients and customers appropriately.
- Compounds hazardous and non-hazardous, sterile and non-sterile products by selecting, calculation and measuring the appropriate ingredients; mixing in a safe and effective manner utilizing aseptic technique when appropriate; inspects final product for accuracy, suitability and elegance; labels the product, and maintain the required documents for record keeping.
- Prepares all intravenous admixture products such as hyperalimentation, piggyback, peritoneal dialysis, narcotic drips, etc. utilizing pharmaceutical knowledge and aseptic technique as required by USP 797 guidelines under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
- Compounds and/or reconstitutes oral or external medications (non-sterile), including calculating and converting to proper weights and measures the amount of drug or solution to be used.
- Packages prescriptions for mailing utilizing proper packaging materials required to protect medications from damage during shipping.
- Assists with inventory management.
- Conducts monthly ward and clinic inspections.
- Trains and orients new technicians and students regarding facility and department policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or attending pharmacist.
