Duties

The incumbent serves as a Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiovascular) in the Cardiology Section of Medical Service at the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  The duties will include the following but are not limited to:
Performs highly specialized, complex and difficult electrocardiographic exams including, but not limited to ambulatory monitoring of arrhythmias (Holter), exercise stress testing (ETT), electrocardiograms, and tilt table testing.

• Provides a preliminary diagnostic evaluation to the physician.
• Recognizes typical patient reactions and signs of distress including the ability to recognize, report and treat potentially lethal arrhythmias.
• Adjusts or adapts common equipment settings and standardized procedures to accomplish acceptable results with patients with complicating conditions.
• Provides guidance to lower graded technicians.
• Provides in-service training on the EKG equipment and related instrumentation.
• Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:  

• U.S. citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Education.  There are not specific educational requirements for this occupation.
• Licensure or Certification.  Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-06 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred Certification: Certification by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) is highly desirable.  Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience

Grade Determinations:
Experience and KSA Requirements: To qualify at the GS-07 level, applicants must also meet the core competencies defined at the GS-06 (see below):
GS-06:
Experience:
1 year of experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities to fully perform all cardiographic tests and examinations and to function as a technical expert in the Cardiology Section laboratory and provide oversight and/or guidance to other technicians.  In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Ability to recognize special patient needs such as disabilities, impaired mobility, and complicating medical conditions in order to prepare and position the patient for the prescribed procedure.
2. Knowledge of the specialized equipment and accessories appropriate to Holter monitoring and ability to perform such tests.
3. Knowledge of universal precautions and sterilization techniques and ability to follow CDC guidelines in cleaning equipment.
4. Ability to monitor the patient for adverse reactions and take appropriate action.
5. Ability to operate the equipment to perform standard and routine highly specialized procedures including exercise stress testing.

GS-07:
Experience:
At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Knowledge of typical patient reactions and signs of distress including the ability to recognize, report and treat potentially lethal arrhythmias.
2. Knowledge of common equipment settings and standardized procedures plus knowledge of common errors and corrective measures.
3. Ability to modify procedures/positions to obtain the correct results with patients with complicating conditions such as amputations, Parkinson's disease, structural defects, and scar tissue.
4. Ability to act as a mentor or preceptor to lower graded technicians.
5. Ability to conduct in-service training on the EKG equipment and related instrumentation.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting of 45 pounds and over; heavy carrying 45 pounds and over; straight pulling and pushing; reaching above the shoulder; use of fingers, both hands required; walking; standing; kneeling; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to16" to jaeger 1-4; and far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other.
