WHO MAY BE CONSIDERED: Open to all qualified U.S. citizens. You do not have to be a current or former government employee to be considered for this position.
This is a Term position. Initial appointment is 13 months with possible extensions up to 4 years.
Duties
Employee will perform any aspect of maintenance and construction of park facilities which includes: paved and dirt roads, trails, campgrounds, fencing, visitor centers, housing units, and vault toilets. The employee will work with journeyman or trades staff on duties including: demolition, construction, concrete work, rough carpentry, finish carpentry, plumbing, painting, trail maintenance and trail building, and road work including flagging. Employee may maintain visitor facilities on an occasional basis duties include cleaning restrooms and vault toilets, visitor centers, picnic areas, camping areas, and collecting and recycling trash. The employee also operates vehicles on all types of roads including rough dirt roads.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work requires employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all seasons under temperatures ranging from 0 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Work conditions may be windy, dusty, buggy and noisy. Must be prepared to wear and use personal protective equipment that may be heavy and/or uncomfortable.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION:
The Southeast Utah Group (SEUG) is comprised of two National Parks: Arches and Canyonlands, and two National Monuments: Hovenweep, and Natural Bridges.
These positions are duty stationed at either Arches National Park or Canyonlands Headquarters
Arches National Park contains the world's largest concentration of natural stone openings.
Arches, spires, balanced rocks, canyons and fins of colorful red rocks are set against the dramatic
backdrop of the La Sal Mountains, rising to over 12,000 feet in elevation. Due to Arches close proximity to Moab, which is only five miles away, the park is a very popular destination for tourist from all over the US and the World, with a current visitation of almost 1.5 million annually. Moab, Utah, is a town of approximately 6,000 residents sitting at a 4,000 foot elevation. Moab provides all basic amenities including doctors, dentists, hospital, schools (K-12), churches, and shopping.
Canyonlands National Park preserves a wilderness of rock at the heart of the Colorado Plateau.
Water and gravity have been prime architects of this land, cutting flat layers of sedimentary rock
into hundreds of canyons, mesa, buttes, fins, arches, and spires. At center stage are two canyons
carved by the Green and Colorado Rivers. Based on the topography of these two canyons, Canyonlands is divided into three districts: Island in the Sky, the Needles, and the Maze. The closet town to Island in the Sky is Moab, which is 35 miles away. The closest town to Needles is Monticello, which is 50 miles away, and Moab is 75 miles. The closest town to the Maze is, well there just isn't any. Canyonlands is also the headquarters for SEUG in Moab, UT and this is where the trail crew, road crew, and project crew are based out of.
Moab is a town of approximately 6,000 residents at an elevation of 4,000 feet. Moab provides all basic amenities including doctors, dentists, hospital, schools (K-12), churches, shopping, and a college extension.
