This recruitment will be used to fill a temporary position. This appointment is not to exceed 1039 hours in a twelve month period, although it may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.
This position is located at Navajo National Monument near Shonto, Arizona in the northeastern part of the state.
Duties
Perform routine laborer duties in office buildings, visitor center and maintenance shop area of Navajo National Monument. Collect and dispose of litter from parking lots, housing and picnic area, trails and roadside. Sweep trails and sidewalks, clean drainage ditches, culverts and metal drains. Weed eat and cut grass at various park locations. Trim trees and haul brush. Assist higher skilled employees with routine and special projects. Perform janitorial duties for buildings in the absence of a janitor and as back-up support.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work performed requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. Lift and move objects over 50 pounds and, in some cases, carry 80 to 100 pounds or more with assistance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well-lighted, heated and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust and dirt along with the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Monument headquarters is located on a remote sandstone plateau in northeastern Arizona on the Navajo Indian Reservation at an elevation of about 7,300 feet. The upland area is semi-arid with pinion and juniper forests and associated semi-desert plants and animals with isolated pockets of alpine timber in nearby canyons. Deep canyons originated near each separated unit of the monument where well preserved ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings are found. Daytime temperatures range from 85-95 degree Fahrenheit during the summer months and from 25-35 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter. Limited shopping and medical facilities are available in Kayenta, Arizona (35 miles from the monument). Major shopping, medical and dental facilities are available in Farmington, New Mexico and Flagstaff, Arizona which are both approximately 150 miles away.
