This is a full-time, temporary appointment not to exceed 1 year with the Kern National Wildlife Refuge Complex, located in Delano, California. This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 1040 hours in a service year. Incumbent may be rehired in subsequent years as long as 1040 hours has not been exceeded in the previous year.

Duties

• Instructs a crew of 4-10 YCC enrollees in a wide variety of land resource improvement projects such as fish and wildlife habitat, watershed diversion structures, and stream improvement.
• Provides technical guidance and direction in all phases of field projects to ascertain proper performance and to satisfactorily answer the enrollee's questions about the projects.
• Provides sufficient amount of description to accomplish a given project safely and efficiently and with an adequate amount of time for a learning experience.  Alert for any adverse social behavior and discipline problems.
• Provides direction and information to enrollees at the work site for Environmental Awareness (EA), "hands-on," and participatory activities.
• Assists in the preparation of EA lesson plans by providing technical data and knowledge on the subject.
• Reports enrollees' time, work programs, and overall performance evaluations.

Qualifications

You must meet all qualification requirements outlined in this vacancy by 11:59 PM (EST) on the closing date of the announcement.
QUALIFICATIONS: You must meet A, B, or C below to be qualified for this position.
A. Have six months of general experience PLUS six months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-3 level in the federal service. General Experience is any type of work that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of this position, or experience which provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes. Specialized Experience includes: group leader in a community or residential recreation or training program, youth summer camp counselor, job skills trainer, work that demonstrated the ability to lead and train members of a job crew, group activities leader in the Armed Services, unit leader for a dormitory group in a residential facility, assistant to associate staff engaged in work of a social services nature such as drug/alcohol addiction, or other work directly related to the duties of the position. Your resume must provide sufficient information to confirm your experience.
B. Have successfully completed 2 years of study above high school that (a) included at least 12 semester hours of subjects directly related to the work of this position, or (b) was supplemented by experience in activities that afforded the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate the skills required by the position. The supplementary experience may have been gained, for example, in part-time or summer employment, in volunteer social welfare or recreation programs, or in community organizations. You must submit a copy of your transcripts to qualify on education.
C. Have a combination of specialized experience and education as described above, that, when computed as percentages of their respective requirements, equals at least 100% when combined. Only education beyond the first year (30 semesters or equivalent) is creditable using this method. You must submit a copy of your transcripts to qualify on a combination of education and experience.
NOTE: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s) and grade point average or class ranking. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the academic professor or from your school stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; however, if selected, you will be required to produce original transcripts.
