New Orleans is perhaps the most unique city in the United States with its own distinctive history, culture, architecture, music and cuisine. The delta region as a whole is similarly unique, with a history and culture that are both shared with New Orleans and apart from it. As a major port city, its population is very cosmopolitan. The unique delta culture is often described as a "gumbo" having a collective flavor yet with individual components. Louisiana is relatively constant semitropical climate. The normal daily temperature in New Orleans is 68 degrees Fahrenheit ranging from 52 degrees in January to 82 degree in July.
The sites in Lafayette, Thibodaux and Eunice, Louisiana interpret the Acadian culture of the area. The Barataria Preserve in Marrero, Louisiana interprets the natural and cultural history of the uplands, swamps, and marshlands of the region. Six miles southeast of New Orleans is the Chalmette Battlefield and National Cemetery, site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans and the final resting place for soldiers from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, and Vietnam. The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park visitor center is located in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana.
