Summary

About the Agency

This position is part of the National Background Investigations Bureau, Office of Personnel Management. If selected, you will be responsible for performing a variety of technical and administrative duties in support of the program. Local travel and interaction with the public will be required at times to conduct record checks.

This position is also being announcement under the Agency's Merit Promotion Plan to federal employees and non-competitive appointment eligible. If you wish to be considered under Merit Promotion or Non-Competitive procedures, you MUST apply under the Merit Promotion announcement.

Duties

As an Investigative Assistant at the GS-1802-5, some of your typical work assignments may include under supervision:

• Perform administrative duties to assist the Supervisory Investigator and operations of the office.
  Conduct record checks.
• Review a variety of records for suitability and personnel security purposes.
• Prepare Reports of Investigation (ROI) summarizing information and stating pertinent facts.
• Assist investigators who are conducting personnel background investigations for security clearance and/or suitability for employment.
• Enter and track data in the Personnel Investigations Processing System.

• Suitable for Federal employment, determined by a background investigation
• May be required to successfully complete a probationary period

Qualifications

For the GS 5: You must have at least one year experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal government to include organizing information, maintaining data base records (entering, searching for, retrieving, editing, and deleting data), using word processing and basic spreadsheet software to accomplish my work, reviewing basic documents (such as employment applications, claims for benefits, loan applications, contracts, or investigative forms) for accuracy and completeness.

OR Have successfully completed four years of post-high-school education.

OR Have a combination of experience and education that meets the minimum qualification requirements.

You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Unless otherwise stated: (1) official or unofficial transcripts are acceptable, or (2) you may submit a list with all of your courses, grades, semester, year, and credit for the course. PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) was taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
