Duties

NOTE: This is a part-time position (20 hours total). Benefits and time-off accrual will be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.
This position is within the Nursing Service at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Medical Center/LSCVAMC in Cleveland, OH. In this position you will serve as a Hospital Escort assigned to Patient Care Services within Nursing Service. Your major duties include:

• Responsible for the safe transportation of Veterans within the LSCVAMC;
• Maintain constant observation of the patient at all times while performing in the role as a sitter;
• Interact with patient through conversation and engage patient through verbal communication;
• Observe patient and intervene if necessary to prevent physical injury or patient elopement;
• Operate a wheelchair, gurney, or cart for transporting patients;
• Ensure appropriate identification of patients prior to their transporting;
• Ensure transport equipment are in proper working condition prior to transporting patients;
• Observe patient during constant observation and transportation for signs of distress;
• Transport specimens, records, medications, patient support equipment to and from patient care areas;
• Provide emotional support to patients and their families.

Work Schedule: SHIFTS AVAILABLE:7:30 AM - 4:00 PM OR 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM (Midnight) OR 12:00 AM (Midnight) - 8:00 AM - The employee may work more hours in one week vs. the other week - 20 hours total.
ALL POSITIONS are subject to rotating weekend and holidays.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test results is received.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE:
Possess 6 months of general experience, which is (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation, and 6 months of specialized experience which is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Qualifying specialize experience is providing emotional support to patients and their families; provide guidance to hospital visitors; transport/escort patients; transport specimens, records, medications, patient support equipment to and from patient care areas; experience transporting deceased patients by following protocol and delivering them to the mortuary.

EDUCATION:
Possess one (1) year above high school with course (s) related to the occupation, if required.
OR
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Possess the appropriate combination of education and experience, as described above, to meet the requirements of this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The position requires extensive periods of standing, walking, and the pushing of patient transport devices (i.e. wheelchairs, gurneys, and carts). There is a possibility of assisting in positioning patients. Position duties require regular and recurring bending, lifting, and stooping, stretching, and similar activities.
The work environment consists of wards, clinics, elevators, diagnostic areas, treatment areas, halfways and other areas where the incumbent must go to transport/or escort patients, family members, and visitors. Special caution should be used to prevent injuries in high risks areas (i.e. elevator doors, wet floors, etc.). The work is performed in an environment which involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions.
