Joining the Secret Service, Office of Investigations, Forensic Services Division will allow you to utilize your expertise in fingerprint analysis to support criminal investigations carried out by the Secret Service. This position is covered by Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime (AUO) and additional compensation may be paid at the rate of up to 25% of the base salary.

Duties

The selectee will serve as a Fingerprint Specialist in the Office of Investigations, Forensic Services Division. Typical work assignments include:

• Developing, examining, comparing, analyzing and reporting fingerprints on a variety of surfaces using highly technical and advanced laboratory equipment and chemicals.
• Performing complex digital enhancements of prints; and searching, comparing and analyzing prints using an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).
• Serving as a team member/coordinator of teams dispatched to crime scenes; collecting, preserving and analyzing evidence while maintaining chain of custody and integrity of the evidence.
• Serving as an expert witness in court proceedings; planning, coordinating and conducting technical research projects; drafting and reviewing reports, recommendations, standard operating procedures and guidelines. Conducting training for developmental level specialists; and serving as a technical expert and liaison.

Qualifications

GS-12: You qualify for the GS-12 level (starting salary $79,720) if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level performing duties such as: analyzing complex fingerprint cases; imperfect and partial latent fingerprint impressions that contain only the minimum number of points necessary to make an identification; conducting methods development projects to improve latent fingerprint examination capabilities; serving as a team member for a team dispatched to crime scenes; conducting research projects to devise new methods and techniques to enhance latent fingerprint examination capabilities; assisting with training for developmental level specialists; preparing written laboratory reports based on examinations; testifying as an expert witness in the area of latent fingerprint examinations.


GS-13: You qualify for the GS-13 level (starting salary $94,796) if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level performing duties such as: analyzing complex fingerprint cases; imperfect and partial latent fingerprint impressions that contain only the minimum number of points necessary to make an identification and partial latent fingerprint impressions; conducting methods development projects to improve latent fingerprint examination capabilities; serving as a team coordinator for a team dispatched to crime scenes; planning and coordinating projects to improve latent fingerprint examination capabilities; coordinating and conducting training for developmental level specialists; preparing written laboratory reports based on examinations; and testifying as an expert witness in the area of latent fingerprint examinations.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Conditions of Employment If selected for this position, you will be required to:

• Undergo occasional travel.
• Physical Demands: The work is mostly sedentary, but requires standing, bending and carrying of light items such as papers, files, and packages. At crime scenes, heavy lifting of objects (i.e., printing presses, equipment, packages, etc.) may be required.
• Work Environment: The work is performed predominately in a laboratory setting. Special safety precautions such as the wearing and use of protective devices (goggles, dust and mist respirators, rubber or plastic gloves, and laboratory smocks) are often required. Some work is performed in the field.
